Ram file:
Pointer file for real media streams.

Real Audio:
An audio streaming format created by Real Networks.

Real Media:
A streaming format created by Real Networks.

Re-broadcast:
The re-distribution of a webcast taken from an encoder to multiple client computers.

Re-buffering:
Buffering part way through a stream, which occurs when there is network congestion and all of the data stored in the buffer has been used up.

Reference file:
A text file containing URL's of media file locations, and proprietory information about the stream. Sometimes called a meta or pointer file, the most common ones have file extention .asx for Windows Media .ram for Real Media and .qtl for QuickTime.

Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP):
One of the IPv6 protocols. RTP is designed to provide end-to-end network transport functions for applications transmitting real-time data, such as audio, video, or simulation data, over multicast or unicast network services.

Real-Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP):
Protocol used by networks to deliver controlled amounts of streaming audio and video.

Real Networks pioneered streaming media in the mid to late ninety's.

With each release of the player, production and distribution software advancements are made, and the quality improves.

At the time of writing, it is claimed that DVD quality video can be delivered at around the 800Kbps level.
