Digital Rights Management (DRM):
The encryption of a piece of content to protect it against general use. Authenticated users are granted licenses with appropriate usage permissions.

DS-3:

DRM

Digital Rights Management is the term given to restricting access to authenticated users only.

It is possible to dictate a wide range of business rules that give access to one or more files for a fixed period of time, or a certain number of plays of a video and all sorts of other combinations.

The protected files can be distributed freely by all sorts of means including CD, email, ftp, or super distribution using peer-to-peer networks such as Napster.

When a user tries to play a video, the license on their player is checked, and where appropriate they are forwarded to a license server where they must enter a password or purchase a license to view the encrypted content.
